Tomasi - Concerto
This virtuosic 1949 competition piece is one of the many pieces written for Marcel Mule. The riveting introduction charges forwards at breakneck speed stopping for a brief cadenza before more pyrotechnics. The drama of the piece is sustained most of the way through with unsettled harmonies constantly shifting through modulation stacked on modulation. There are a number of tempo changes and metric modulations which serve to add to the overwhelming impact of the piece. The piece is actually very brief and would serve well as an encore. It has been recorded by Claude Delangle on his Under the Sign of the Sun album.
