Here is a resource for those preparing orchestral excerpts. I will add to this over time.
Bernstein - West Side Story
Musical theatre is not particularly a great passion of mine, but there is plenty to appreciate Bernstein's high energy adaption of Romeo and Julet. The famous opening sax solo is crucial to setting the mood for the entire work and requires not only accuracy but a fitting tone and style.

Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition: The Old Castle
Khachaturian - Sabre Dance
Sabre Dance is perhaps the most famous unknown saxophone solo, nestling in a middle section of the famous Khachaturian movement from the final act of 'Gayane' ballet. Parrying, dodging, ducking, diving, rolling, feinting all play a part in this exciting, though brief encounter. The saxophone solo is a moment of reprise perhaps as the fighters circle and size each other up afresh before the bout resumes.
