Grovlez, Gabriel - Sarabande et Allegro
A reasonably serious and formal opening to this minor key Sarabande has a sense of poise and dignity before some slightly more dissonant piano chimes unsettle us a little. These do not overwhelm the mood though and soon stately phrases return to round off the courtly dance. A subtle tierce de picardi brings matters to a hopeful pause and provides a harmonic bridge to the Allegro which follows.
The Allegro is quite different in character: jaunty, and more passionate. The two movements could almost be a couple, the serious, rational man and the playful wife, who is full of heart. The cheeky pecking semiquavers at the end provide a satisfying conclusion.
Note: there are a few errors in the part. One is the rhythm 9 bars before the Allegro - the last beat has a dotted quaver in the middle of the 4 beamed notes which should really be a quaver.
