Dubois, Pierre-Max - Concerto
1. Lento expressivo–Allegro
2. Sarabande: Lento nostalgico
3. Rondo: Allegretto
Pierre Max Dubois was born in 1930 and wrote prolifically for the saxophone. This piece, the first of his two concerti for saxophone, features a spectacularly long cadenza which begins the first movement before launching into the exhilarating Allegro. Originally written for Jean-Marie Londeix in 1959, the virtuosic work stretches the soloist to the limit, demanding both clarity of articulation and sensitive phrase shaping, not to mention excellent technical facility. The second movement with its hints of phrygian dissonance embarks upon a beautiful textural journey, full of sorrow and melancholy. The piece culminates with a rousing rondo movement, bringing the work to a bright and optimistic conclusion.
