Bennett, Ed - Do Not Bend
solo alto sax, fl (doub. picc), ob, cl (doub. bs cl), bari sax, tpt, hrn, 2 trb, 2 perc, pf, 2 vn, va, vc, db 16'
This astounding concerto by Ed Bennett was written in 2006 and is inspired by the work of eccentric artist David Shrigley. Do Not Bend is the name of a collection of Shrigley's work featuring bizarre illustrations and photographs. The saxophone concerto is paired with another work entitled 'Shrigley'. I premiered the work with the Birmingham Conservatoire's Thallein Ensemble, conducted by Nicholas Cleobury in the recently demolished Adrian Boult Hall. The piece is a visceral rollercoaster and relentlessly pummels the listener with sonic energy. Some more reflective moments are ever tainted with a sense of unease and awkward stumblings.
