Bach - Sonata in Gm BWV1020
This sonata is well known and loved among wind players and although its authorship is disputed, it is very beautiful and carefully crafted. The strident first movement has a thrust and drive that cuts through in a most assertive way. The beautiful, elegant Adagio provides a sense of calm repose before the energetic and intricate energy of the final Allegro. There can be problems when performed on the lower saxophones, which may make some of the music sound rather lumpy and care must be taken to make the lines between lead instrument and piano interact in the right sort of delicate, nuanced manner.
